5 Days / 4 Nights Siwa Oasis & White Desert Private Adventure

This 5-day Siwa Oasis and White Desert private tour combines two very different parts of Egypt’s Western Desert in one ambitious itinerary: the salt lakes, springs and historic sites of Siwa Oasis, followed by Bahariya Oasis, the Black Desert, Djara Cave and an overnight camp in the White Desert.

The published route begins in Cairo, spends two nights in Siwa, continues to Bahariya for a hotel night, then moves by private 4×4 through El Heiz, Crystal Mountain, Aqabat Valley, Moon Cave, Djara Cave and the White Desert before camping under the stars. Day 5 returns through Bahariya to Cairo.

For travelers who want Siwa without the White Desert section, compare our 3-day Siwa Oasis Adventure. For a dedicated Djara Cave itinerary from the Bahariya side, see the 3 Days / 2 Nights White Desert & Djara Cave Adventure.

Important Route and Permit Note

The published Day 3 itinerary currently states a transfer from Siwa Oasis to Bahariya Oasis. This is an operationally sensitive part of the program. Current travel guidance and local restrictions can affect which Western Desert roads are open and which permits are required.

As of the latest review, the direct Al Bawiti–Siwa road is subject to serious restrictions and should not be treated as a guaranteed operating route. The exact transfer, permits and legal routing must therefore be reconfirmed with the relevant authorities and official local guides before the trip is sold as operational for a specific date. This note does not alter the published itinerary; it clarifies that road access must be verified before departure.

For a wider explanation of current desert access and permit considerations, read our White Desert safety and permits guide.

Day 1: Cairo to Siwa Oasis

The journey begins with an early morning departure from Cairo. The published itinerary estimates the drive at approximately 8–9 hours and includes lunch during the journey.

After arrival in Siwa, guests check in at the hotel and have free time to relax before dinner. The first night is spent at the hotel in Siwa Oasis.

This first day is primarily a long overland transfer, so the itinerary intentionally keeps sightseeing light after arrival.

Day 2: The Highlights of Siwa Oasis

Day 2 is the main Siwa sightseeing day and combines archaeology, traditional architecture, natural water features and sunset scenery.

Siwa is known for its highly saline lakes, springs, palm and olive landscapes and archaeological sites. Egypt’s official tourism portal highlights these natural and cultural features as defining parts of the oasis experience.

Mountain of the Dead and Shali Fortress

The day starts with the Mountain of the Dead (Gebel Al Mawta), one of Siwa’s major archaeological sites, before continuing to the historic Shali Fortress.

Shali represents the traditional fortified heart of Siwa and is one of the oasis’s most distinctive architectural landmarks. The combination of archaeology and old-town architecture gives context to Siwa before the itinerary moves toward its springs and salt lakes.

Temple of Alexander the Great

The itinerary then visits the Temple of Alexander the Great, also known as the Temple of the Oracle. Siwa is historically associated with the oracle of Amun visited by Alexander after his arrival in Egypt.

Lunch is scheduled at a local restaurant during the sightseeing day.

Siwa Salt Lakes and Cleopatra Spring

The itinerary specifically includes swimming in Siwa’s famous Salt Lakes. Their high salinity and striking blue water make them one of the oasis’s most recognizable natural experiences.

The next stop is Cleopatra Spring, one of Siwa’s best-known springs. The popular name is rooted in local tradition; it should not be taken as proof that Cleopatra personally bathed there.

After the spring visit, the itinerary allows a short return to the hotel for rest.

Fatnas Island Sunset and Hot Sulfur Spring

Later in the day, guests head to Fatnas Island for sunset. The combination of lake water, palms and western desert light makes this one of Siwa’s classic sunset settings.

The itinerary also includes time at a natural hot sulfur spring before dinner and the second overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 3: Siwa Oasis to Bahariya Oasis

According to the published itinerary, Day 3 begins with breakfast in Siwa followed by departure toward Bahariya Oasis, with lunch during the journey.

Because this transfer depends on current road access, checkpoints and travel permissions, its exact routing must be confirmed shortly before operation. Travelers should not assume that historic desert roads are continuously open simply because two oasis towns appear connected on a map.

For more background on Bahariya and its desert surroundings, see our Bahariya Oasis Egypt travel guide.

English Mountain and Black Desert Sunset

After reaching the Bahariya side of the itinerary, the program includes English Mountain followed by sunset views in the Black Desert.

The Black Desert is characterized by dark volcanic-looking hills and black-stone-covered slopes around the Bahariya region. If you want more context before the trip, read our Black Desert Egypt travel guide.

Dinner is planned at a local family house, giving the evening a more personal Bahariya and Bedouin hospitality element before transfer to the hotel for the third overnight stay.

Day 4: White Desert and Djara Cave Expedition

Day 4 is the most intensive off-road day of the itinerary. After breakfast at the hotel, the journey moves toward El Heiz Village and its natural hot springs before continuing deeper into the desert.

The included private 4×4 safari vehicle is specifically listed for the White Desert section of the tour.

El Heiz, Crystal Mountain and Aqabat Valley

The first part of the desert circuit includes El Heiz Village, Crystal Mountain and Aqabat Valley.

These stops represent the changing geological landscapes between Bahariya and the White Desert region: springs and oasis settlement around El Heiz, bright mineral-rich formations around Crystal Mountain and the dramatic cliffs and desert floor of Aqabat.

Moon Cave and Djara Cave

The itinerary continues to Moon Cave before the longer drive to Djara Cave. The published program notes that Djara Cave is approximately two hours from the White Desert area, which is why it should be treated as a dedicated expedition element rather than a casual short detour.

Djara Cave is also featured in our dedicated White Desert & Djara Cave Adventure, useful for travelers comparing a cave-focused safari with this larger Siwa combination. For more background, read the Djara Cave Egypt travel guide, Djara Cave history and rock art guide and Djara Cave packing list.

White Desert National Park

After Djara Cave, the itinerary visits the most famous rock formations of the White Desert. Egypt’s Environmental Affairs Agency describes the White Desert protected area as a unique karst landscape characterized by brilliant white chalk, wind-shaped formations, fossils, dunes and rare geological scenery.

For a broader destination overview, see our White Desert Egypt travel guide.

White Desert Camping and Stargazing

The fourth night is a desert camping experience in the White Desert. The published itinerary includes a traditional Bedouin dinner around the campfire, stargazing and overnight camping.

Desert camping equipment is included, together with a professional local desert guide, White Desert permits and protected-area fees.

Day 5: White Desert to Cairo

The final morning starts with breakfast at the campsite and time to enjoy the White Desert scenery before returning toward Bahariya Oasis.

Lunch is included before departure from Bahariya, followed by the transfer back to Cairo. Arrival in Cairo marks the end of the five-day program.

What Is Included?

The current inclusions list private transportation throughout the trip, four nights of accommodation, all meals, soft drinks and bottled water, a private 4×4 safari vehicle in the White Desert, entrance fees to archaeological and tourist sites in Siwa, White Desert permits and protected-area fees, a professional local desert guide and desert camping equipment.

What Is Not Included?

The published exclusions are international or domestic flights, tips and personal expenses, alcoholic beverages and travel insurance.

Who Is This Tour Best For?

This itinerary is best suited to travelers who want to combine Siwa’s culture and salt-lake landscapes with a serious Western Desert expedition rather than booking two separate short tours.

It also suits travelers comfortable with long road transfers, changing desert conditions, 4×4 travel and one night of basic desert camping. Because the itinerary includes Djara Cave and a cross-oasis transfer, it requires more operational planning than a standard Siwa-only or classic two-day White Desert tour.

Planning and Safety for the Western Desert

Western Desert trips should be operated with current permits, authorized local guidance and route confirmation. Mobile reception can be limited and medical facilities sparse in remote areas.

Before departure, travelers should reconfirm road access, the Siwa–Bahariya transfer plan, Djara Cave access, White Desert permits and the exact camping location. Final logistics may need to respond to current authority instructions while preserving the intended experiences wherever legally and safely possible.
